Projects |
Each year, Church
of the Nativity has taken on additional projects to ease the
suffering in Haiti.
-
STARFISH I, in 1998, built 27 houses in Canapé-Verte
-
STARFISH II, in 1999, equipped a desperately needed mobile medical clinic, which served 6,000 patients in its first two years of operation
-
STARFISH III, in 2000, rebuilt The Little Children of Jesus Home in Lizon for precious special-needs children whose previous home was destroyed by fire
-
STARFISH IV, in 2001, began the development of Nativity Village I with 27 houses and a community sanitation facility on an abandoned sugar cane plantation on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.
-
STARFISH V, in 2002, continued the development of Nativity Village with another 120 houses. New construction methods are now allowing us to build duplexes for 50% more than single units. The dangerous roof of the small church serving this community was also replaced.
-
STARFISH VI, in 2003, brought the total number of houses built in Nativity Village to 296 single units. The people of St. Collette's Church in Livonia, Michigan joined Nativity this year in contributing toward housing for the poor in Nativity Village. Fr. Henry Roodbeen, pastor of St. Colette's, and 3 of his parishioners joined Fr. Martin and 15 Nativity parishioners on another pilgrimage to Haiti in August, 2003.
-
STARFISH VII, in 2004, continued the partnership of Nativity Church and St. Colette's as they work toward the goal of providing 500 families in Nativity Village with safe shelter. By the end of the year, only 11 double units remained to be built. Nativity sent another group of pilgrims to Haiti.
-
STARFISH VIII, in 2005, saw the completion of the housing and the beginning of Phase II – construction of a school, a food program, job training, and several entrepreneurial and small business projects. Education and health care will be improved and a self-sustaining revenue stream will be developed for the residents of Nativity Village. The primary school was completed in late 2006, and visited by Nativity parishioners in 2007.
-
STARFISH IX, in 2006, continued the development of the original Nativity Village and began a new project - Nativity Village II - on the north coast of Haiti, near Cap Haitien. This new development includes housing for 250 families, a fishing village co-op and an inland fresh water tilapia farm. Nativity parishioners traveled to Haiti to dedicate the tilapia farm in 2006, and to open the fishing village in 2007. Another 50 homes were added and there are now 300 houses in Nativity Village at Prolongé. A second fishing village at Madras was dedicated in June, 2008.
-
STARFISH X, in 2007, continued work on the first 2 Nativity Village projects and began a new development, Nativity Village III - at El Corté, in the mountainous frontier along the border with the Dominican Republic. Here, 50 families in a lost village were living without water, sanitation and basic shelter. A well was drilled, with storage tank and several outlets, 50 houses were built and basic sanitation and showers provided. A community center and chicken farm was also added. The completed Nativity Village at El Corté was blessed by Fr. Martin on Nov. 6, 2008. In addition, in 2007 a school tuition program was started for the first 2 villages.
-
STARFISH XI, in 2008, began a new development, Nativity Village IV - at Lozandier, on the south coast of Haiti. Here, a fishing village, houses, water wells, and animal husbandry projects are underway. Construction should be complete in Spring, 2009.
